Alexander Nevsky
Alexander Nevsky was a key figure of medieval Rus' and is commonly regarded as a hero and a saint by the Russian people. He was born on May 13, 1221, in Pereslavl-Zalessky, Russia, to Prince Yaroslav II Vsevolodovich and Feodosia Igorevna of Ryazan.

Early Life and Origins
Alexander was the fourth son of Grand Prince Yaroslav II Vsevolodovich of Vladimir.
He was named after the Christian martyr, Saint Alexander, a prominent bishop who was killed in captivity during the persecutions against Christians under the reign of Emperor Decius.
Being fourth in line, he was considered to have no chance of succeeding his father to the throne of Vladimir.
In 1236, he was called by the leaders of Novgorod as their military commander.
In 1239, he married Alexandra, the daughter of the Prince of Polotsk.
Reign and Family
Alexander was elected prince of Novgorod in 1236 and served as its military commander.
He was also the Grand Prince of Kiev (1246–52) and of Vladimir (1252–63).
As a ruler, he continued to restore Russia by promulgating laws and building fortifications.
He changed the constitutional base of ruling in Novgorod to implement institutional sovereignty.
Due to his bonding with Sartaq Khan, the son of Mongol ruler Batu Khan, Nevsky was proclaimed the Grand Prince of Vladimir in 1252.
Alexander had several children with his two wives, including Vasily Alexandrovich, Eudoxia Alexandrovna, Dmitry Alexandrovich, Andrey Alexandrovich, and Daniil Alexandrovich.
Legacy and Controversy
Alexander Nevsky is regarded as a great leader and a hero by the Russian people. He is still used as a patriotic figure in Russia today and has been the subject of books and films.
He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and made a saint.
He is the patron saint of soldiers and the borders of Russia.
However, his collaboration with the Mongols in imposing their rule on Russia has been a subject of controversy.
Conflicts and Death
Alexander Nevsky halted the eastward drive of the Germans and Swedes by defeating a Swedish invasion force at the confluence of the Rivers Izhora and Neva in 1240.
By defeating the invaders, he won the name Nevsky, “of the Neva”.
He also collaborated with the Mongols in imposing their rule on Russia.
Alexander died on November 14, 1263, in Gorodets, Vladimir-Suzdal, at the age of 42.
He was buried at Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
