Pervez Musharraf was born in Delhi, India, to a family of civil servants.
His father, Syed Musharrafuddin, was a civil servant in the British Indian Government, and his mother, Zarin Musharraf, was a housewife. After the partition of India in 1947, his family migrated to Pakistan, where he spent most of his childhood.

Education

Pervez Musharraf attended Saint Patrick's School in Karachi and later joined the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul, where he graduated in 1964.
He also attended the Command and Staff College in Quetta and the National Defense College in Islamabad.

Career

Pervez Musharraf joined the Pakistan Army in 1964 and served in various positions, including as a commando in the Special Service Group. He also served as a military attaché in Spain and later as the director-general of military operations.
In 1998, he was appointed as the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and in 1999, he became the Chief of Army Staff.

Political Career

Pervez Musharraf came to power in a bloodless coup in 1999 and suspended the constitution and dissolved parliament.
He formed the National Security Council, made up of civilian and military appointees, to run Pakistan in the interim.
In early 2001, he assumed the presidency and later attempted to negotiate an agreement with India over the Kashmir region.
He reinstated the constitution in 2002, though it was heavily amended with the Legal Framework Order (LFO), a provision of which extended his term as president for another five years.
Parliamentary elections were held in October 2002, and in late 2003, the legislature ratified most provisions of the LFO.
In August 2008, the governing coalition moved to begin impeachment proceedings against Musharraf, and he announced his resignation on August 18.

Scandals and Controversies

Pervez Musharraf's tenure was marked by several scandals and controversies.
He was accused of corruption and human rights abuses, including the disappearance of political opponents.
He also instituted prohibitions on foreign students' access to studying Islam within Pakistan, an effort that began as an outright ban but was later reduced to restrictions on obtaining visas.
In 2019, he was found guilty of high treason under Article 6 of Pakistan's constitution for suspending the constitution when he imposed a state of emergency in 2007.
