Telefónica is looking for companies with B2C products and services around the world.

After presenting Tech Ventures, teleco announced this Thursday the birth of Wayra X, its first 100% digital hub. "Until now, at Wayra we had a proposal very focused on investing in companies that fit into the Telefónica Group: startups that have a product that can be used by one of our companies", recognizes Andrés Saborido, Global Head of Wayra.

"In that task we have focused a lot on B2B companies. today what we see is an opportunity to complete all that work we had already done including in our portfolio B2C companies". With Wayra X they will invest "more freely "in startups with" disruptive products "and"that do not necessarily have to have a concrete fit in the short term in Telefónica".

This has been explained by Saborido himself in an interview in Business Insider Spain, after having presented both Wayra X and Wayra Builder within the framework of the Innovation Days of the Spanish multinational. The slogan of Wayra X can be: "disruption first". They are looking for companies with solutions for customers in mass markets. Wayra Builder is a venture builder that will cover the company's own developments that become spinoffs, such as Deeder.

To understand what is the difference between Wayra X and Wayra, Saborido highlights another point: "with Wayra our thesis is always to invest in companies that already have a proven product, and we enter a round with different investors. But in Wayra X we enter companies that already have a minimum viable product and are starting to validate it with customers."

That is not to say that Wayra X, Telefónica's new hub, cannot enter companies with another stage of maturity. "We have flexibility," he points out.

Telefónica has announced its first 100% online hub in the same year in which the coronavirus pandemic has been declared, most companies have accelerated their digital transformation processes, and important operations in the Spanish ecosystem have already been closed remotely.
