Media files, such as images and videos, will be deleted from the conversation if temporary messages are active. However, they will remain on users ' devices that have automatic download operational.

Apple has gone shopping for the first time in Spain and has done with Vilynx, a startup that, although it was already based in the United States, all its engineering team and all its development was taking place from Barcelona.

It is the first operation that Apple performs in the Spanish market and, as often happens when the iPhone manufacturer acquires a signature, everything is shrouded in a halo of mystery. It is not known how much he paid, for example, although some media then spoke of 40 million euros.

Vilynx is a firm specialized in artificial intelligence, machine learning and videos. The first thing you can think about when this operation is announced is that Apple continues in the same: in recent months it has acquired several emerging companies to enhance its developments in these areas and in that of augmented reality.

But industry sources tell Business Insider Spain go further and explain why Apple has ended up taking on this Spanish company: Vilynx was already competing for itself with technologies from Google and Facebook.

Vilynx was born in 2013 and is founded in Barcelona by Elisenda Bou-Balust, PhD at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and Juan Carlos Riveiro. The startup was not the first company Riveiro, already managed to sell a first company —Gigle Networks, specializing in the design of multimedia solutions home— almost 10 years ago to Broadcom for about $ 85 million.

The goal of Vilynx is to try to solve one of the great problems that artificial intelligence suffers today: to be able to understand videos. In the words of Elisenda Bou herself, in a talk she gave within the framework of the Barcelona Tech City, the majority of" Human Communication "—talks, phone calls, emails— are"unstructured data".

"The problem with unstructured data is that machines can't understand it. The machine can't respond to you if you send it a video. Machines work with structured data, with databases in which data is a property and a value," Bou herself explained at the time.

Riveiro defended himself like this: "our main difference in the market is that we are the only ones with a true AI brain that not only recognizes, but also understands. Our brain is able to learn by itself and offers true intelligence."

Some of the competitors that Riveiro himself had in that interview is Taboola, a firm that adds advertising inserts in the media. Industry sources abound to Business Insider Spain that a firm that works in a similar field to Vilynx is Clarifai, based in New York and also founded in 2013. At Clarifai they use AI specialized in computer vision and use machine learning with neural networks also to identify and analyze images and videos.

But the same sources stop for a moment and go further. Actually, Vilynx was already competing on another level. It competed with two of the world's largest video recognition companies.

Facebook and Google are two tech giants that have the largest database of videos possible to imagine when training their AI. Facebook Instagram Facebook has all the videos that its users upload to Facebook or Instagram, while Google has nothing more and nothing less than YouTube.

Apple has done with Vilynx to be able to compete with two of the technological giants with which the world is already in dispute. In the talk that Elisenda Bou gave this summer in Barcelona, she also defended why their technology is essential for AI to understand and tag videos, which has allowed them to work with large American chains and Spanish broadcasters such as RTVE or Antena 3.

A learning system without machine supervision. Elisenda detailed in this talk some of the most common methods by which AI is trained. Supervised learning is one in which humans give a data set to the machine: thousands of photos of cats and humans explaining to the 'robot' what a cat is and what a human is.

Another system is that of reinforcement learning, similar to the education given to children. If the machine shows you a picture of a cat and tells you it is a human, it will be given a negative boost. If you say it right, you will be given a positive reinforcement.

The last is unsupervised learning. "We talk about autonomous learning." AI acquires, in Vilynx, another dimension: that of understanding. Always, of course, with the risks that bias may generate. "Would you let your children learn from the internet without supervision?", Bou wondered before a packed audience.

Now, that Vilynx challenge is taken by Apple with its purchase. "We have to think that we have biases, that those biases are on the internet, and that those biases are going to jump into the machines. Then we'll have the problem, to see how we get them out of their heads."
