Childhood
He was born on August 24, 1990, in Luton, England, and spent his early years there before moving to Acton, West London, where he lived with his mother Brenda Edwards, his stepfather, Patrick, and his younger sister, Tanisha.
Edwards' family originates from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. As a child, he was introduced to stage school by his mother, who came fourth in the second series of The X Factor in 2005.
Charity work
Edwards was an ambassador for the Prince's Trust, a youth charity that helps young people set up their own businesses.
In 2021, Edwards set up Jamal Edwards Delve, a project aimed at refurbishing and reopening youth centers.
Securing funding from Google and the Wellcome Trust, in 2019 Edwards founded Jamal Edwards Delve (JED), a grassroots youth-center project.
As of October 2019, Edwards had refurbished and reopened four youth centers in Acton.
British Music
Edwards was a pioneer of British music whose generosity paved the way for generations.
He helped launch the careers of mammoth pop stars such as Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, and Jess Glynne, and he had been given an MBE for services to music in 2014.
Edwards was a conductor and a vessel, embodying the culture’s DIY essence, and allowing adolescent expression to find voice on the newly leveled terrain of YouTube.
He was a mentor to many young artists and helped them get to the next level.
Death
In February 2022, Edwards died from a heart attack after taking cocaine and drinking alcohol.
He was 31 years old. His mother, Brenda Edwards, said she hoped publicizing the circumstances of her son’s death might prevent other families from suffering a similar loss.
Edwards' sudden death shocked Britain’s entertainment business.
Tributes from the royal family and billionaires like Richard Branson, as well as music’s big names, poured in on social media.
