Jody David Scheckter is a South African former racing driver and businessman, best known for competing in Formula One from 1972 to 1980 and winning the 1979 Formula One World Drivers' Championship with Ferrari. Childhood
Jody Scheckter was born on January 29, 1950, in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. He grew up in a family with strong automotive ties; his father owned a Renault dealership in East London, exposing Jody early on to motor vehicles and mechanics. Raised in the Cape Province, his childhood environment fostered his passion for racing from a young age.
Education
Jody was educated at Vincent Primary School followed by Selborne College in East London. He also worked as an engineering apprentice at his family’s Renault dealership, which helped him develop a technical understanding of vehicles alongside his driving skills. This practical background complemented his natural talent and prepared him for the rigors of professional racing.
Career
Scheckter began his racing career on motorcycles before switching to saloon cars. In 1970, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue professional motorsport opportunities. His Formula One debut came in 1972 at the United States Grand Prix with McLaren. Over the following years, he raced for teams including Tyrrell and Wolf, achieving his first Grand Prix wins and finishing as runner-up to Niki Lauda in 1977.
In 1979, after joining Ferrari to partner with Gilles Villeneuve, Scheckter won three Grand Prix races and clinched the World Drivers' Championship, becoming the first African to secure this honor. He raced with Ferrari until 1980 before retiring from Formula One. After retiring, he worked as a broadcaster and later founded an arms training simulation company, Firearms Training Systems (FATS), which became highly successful.
Later, he transitioned to organic farming, acquiring Laverstoke Park Farm in England, turning it into a well-known organic agriculture endeavor and even producing organic sparkling wine, showing versatility beyond the racetrack.

Jody Scheckter is married to Clare Scheckter and they have six children. Among his children, Toby and Tomas Scheckter followed his footsteps into racing, both becoming professional drivers. His older brother Ian Scheckter also raced in Formula One, highlighting the family’s deep motorsport involvement.
