Katseye Biography and Group Origins

Katseye emerged from a partnership between HYBE and Geffen Records, two major entertainment companies that set out to create a new kind of international girl group. Their idea was to combine the intensive training and performance standards associated with the Korean music industry with a global English language pop approach designed for audiences across many countries.

The project began with a worldwide search for young performers who could sing, dance, learn quickly, and work effectively as part of a group. More than 120,000 people submitted applications. That enormous number reflected both the international reach of the project and the growing appeal of artist development programs that give audiences a chance to follow performers before their official debut.

Twenty finalists were selected to participate in The Debut Dream Academy, a competition and training program released through digital platforms in 2023. The contestants faced vocal, dance, teamwork, and performance challenges while receiving feedback from industry professionals. Viewers also played a role by supporting contestants and following their progress throughout the competition.

The final lineup was announced in Los Angeles in November 2023. The six members were Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Manon Bannerman, Megan Skiendiel, Sophia Laforteza, and Yoonchae Jeung. Their different personal histories became one of the group’s defining strengths, creating a lineup that represented multiple cultures while sharing a common goal of performing on the global stage.

Katseye Members and Dream Academy Journey

Katseye includes performers with roots in the United States, the Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland, and families connected to many other parts of the world. Sophia is from Manila, Yoonchae is from Seoul, Manon was raised in Switzerland, Daniela is from Atlanta, Lara is from Los Angeles, and Megan is from Honolulu. Their backgrounds helped the group speak naturally to an international audience.

Each member brought distinct strengths to the final team. Sophia became known for calm leadership and vocal presence. Daniela brought dance experience and energetic stage movement. Lara developed a reputation for powerful singing and expressive delivery. Manon contributed a distinctive visual style and poised stage character, while Megan and Yoonchae added versatility, sharp choreography, and youthful performance energy.

The training process required more than individual skill. A successful group needs members who can blend voices, synchronize movement, support one another under pressure, and communicate a shared identity. The Dream Academy format made that challenge visible. It showed that a polished final performance is usually the result of repeated practice, critique, personal growth, and collaboration behind the scenes.

The group’s formation was later explored in the Netflix documentary series Pop Star Academy Katseye. The series gave viewers a closer look at the emotional demands of the training process and the uncertainty faced by contestants competing for limited places. It also highlighted the human side of a music industry system often seen only through finished videos and live performances.

Music Breakthrough and Major Achievements

The group officially debuted in June 2024 with the single Debut, a confident introduction centered on friendship, ambition, and self belief. The release established an upbeat pop sound supported by precise choreography and a colorful visual identity. It was followed by Touch, a song that gained significant attention online and helped introduce the group to listeners beyond the original competition audience.

Katseye released its first EP, SIS Soft Is Strong, in August 2024. The project explored pop melodies, rhythmic production, confident lyrics, and emotional vulnerability. Its title captured a central part of the group’s image: strength does not have to mean hardness, and confidence can coexist with sensitivity, friendship, and a willingness to grow in public.

Their second EP, Beautiful Chaos, arrived in 2025 and represented a more adventurous stage in their development. Songs including Gnarly and Gabriela gave the group broader commercial momentum and demonstrated a willingness to experiment with bolder concepts. Beautiful Chaos reached the top five of the Billboard 200, a major achievement for a group that had debuted only the year before.

Their ascent showed how music careers now move across many platforms at once. Streaming, short form video, live stages, interviews, fan communities, and documentary storytelling all helped build recognition. Instead of relying only on traditional radio or television exposure, the members connected with audiences through clips, behind the scenes content, performances, and the accessible personality of each artist.
