Born on July 9, 1955, in Central, South Carolina, Lindsey Olin Graham grew up in a working-class family. His parents, Florence James Graham and Millie Graham, owned and operated a local restaurant, pool hall, and liquor store. The family business, known as the Sanitary Cafe, was a cornerstone of the small town and played a central role in Graham’s upbringing.

Tragedy struck during Graham’s college years when both of his parents passed away within 15 months of each other. At just 21 years old, he became the legal guardian of his younger sister, Darline, who was only 13 at the time. Graham attended the University of South Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977 and later a Juris Doctor from the university’s law school in 1981. After law school, Graham entered active duty in the U.S. Air Force, serving as a military lawyer and judge advocate. He was stationed at Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany from 1984 to 1988.
