Nikolaj Jacobsen has become one of the most successful coaches in international handball. Born in Viborg, Denmark, in 1971, he first made his name as a talented left wing before developing a second career as an influential coach.

He began playing handball at GOG Gudme and made his senior debut at 19. His club career later took him to Germany, where he played for Bayer Dormagen and THW Kiel, before returning to Denmark and combining playing duties with coaching work at Viborg HK.

As a player, he earned 148 caps for Denmark. His experience on the court gave him a practical understanding of positioning, movement, pressure, and the split-second decisions required at the highest level.

Nikolaj Jacobsen’s coaching career developed through assistant roles and domestic opportunities. He became head coach of Aalborg Håndbold in 2012 and guided the club to the Danish championship in his first season.

In 2014, he moved to Germany to lead Rhein-Neckar Löwen. His work there produced consecutive German league titles in 2016 and 2017, establishing him as a coach capable of building disciplined and successful teams in one of Europe’s strongest competitions.

He became head coach of Denmark’s men’s national team in 2017. Under his leadership, Denmark won four consecutive IHF World Championship titles in 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025. The team also captured Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games.
